stockTHEY'RE #1- Need a stock tip? You can get a good one from two Fulton Independent eighth graders!

Travail Morgan and Linus Pulley were ranked #1 in the region last school year in the Stock Market Game.  During August’s meeting of the FIS Board of Education, the trading duo were recognized and presented certificates by Debbie Vaughn, board president.

According to Brenda Mahan, gifted/talented teacher at Fulton Middle School, the two students pay and entry fee to play each semester.

“We usually do really well in the Spring,” Mahan explained.

To start the game, the two were given $100,000 in game funds.

“They buy stock in real time,” Mahan said. “Each week they add what was made or subtract what was lost in proceeds.”

The original cash they have left and the funds they earn through the stocks serve as their equity for the game.

According to Pulley, a gold mining company, Apple and Google stocks did really well for them.  Morgan added that petroleum helped their win as well. Mahan said a financial holding company in China helped them skyrocket in the game, but the company tended to fluctuate often and change leadership.

Although they study many companies to determine which stocks to purchase, Pulley said they also randomly pick companies from a list of the top 100 stocks.

Mahan said if the duo had been #1 in the state, they would have earned $300 in real fund.

“This year we are going to try to go for state,” Mahan exclaimed.
