4-H Communications Day

TOP SPEAKERS - A group of Fulton Independent students recently proved they have the knack for public speaking.sw

Fourteen students from grades 4 through 6 earned the right to compete in the 4-H County Communications Day held in Hickman this year. Three of the students – Leia Swift, fourth grade;  Lexus Rushing, fifth grade; and Mia Hancock, sixth grade – will advance to the area rucompetition at Murray State University on Friday, April 21, after placing in the county meet.

The other students who competed in Hickman included Josiah Alford, Carly Bruner, Latecia Carnegie, Charlie Cavness, Kaya Eidson, Lily Haley, Ciara Harper, Naomi McClure, Asia Patton, Layona Pearson and Kaylin Tibbs.

ha4-H Communications Day allows students the opportunity to research interesting topics, draft a speech or demonstration, and practice public speaking. This is a very time consuming project and requires more time than is available during language arts class periods.

“I wanted all students to have this opportunity, and I asked for help. I could not have helped that many students on my own,” said Jennifer Caldwell, a FIS language arts teacher who headed up the FIS speech competition. “I want to thank Tracy Pulley, Brooke Ayers, Daniel Farmer, Wanda Sandling, and Micah King for assisting students in planning, practicing, and/or judging speeches and demonstrations. The students were excited about their projects and worked hard at presenting. I am so proud to have students from FIS representing us. These students have demonstrated what it means to be first class!”
