Local lesson

mLEARNING HOW FULTON WORKS – Chris m3Mason’s American History class at Fulton City High School now has a better understanding of local civics. To follow up a study of local and county governments and how they work, Mason invited Fulton Mayor David Prater to visit the classroom.  Prater spoke about his responsibilities as well as what motivated him to become mayor. He also explained how the local government functioned with a mayor, city manager and city commissioners. The students asked really good questions concerning upcoming city projects and voiced their concerns with bringing new businesses to the community.  They also asked how vacant, dilapidated property and buildings can be dealt with. At one point Prater said, "Wow, you guys are asking the tough questions! I wasn't expecting to be put on the hot seat today!" According to Mason, the students were really tuned in and genuinely interested in what the mayor had to say. “I believe it was the first time for many of the students to actually speak to a city official,” Mason said.  “I feel my class benefited tremendously with his visit and they now have a better idea of what the government actually ‘does.’”
