HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR! - Rachel Rushing’s first grade class at Carr Elementary School celebrated Chinese New Year as part of their instructional time Friday. The students learned how Chinese New Year originated and why the color red is so important to the celebration. They watched a video of a Chinese New Year parade and learned what foods are traditionally served during the holiday time. The students looked at the Chinese zodiac calendar and figured out what animal was celebrated the years they were born. They then learned about the traits of the animal celebrated that year. The students were able to create a panda artwork which they are pictured holding while wearing some Chinese New Year dragon masks.  Chinese New Year, one of the biggest festivals of the Orient, will be officially celebrated February 8 and 2016 is the year of the monkey.
