OPENING DAY - Fulton Independent faculty and staff officially kicked off the 2016-2017 school year Tuesday with the annual Opening Day event at Fulton City High School.
Area businesses and professionals helped with the event by decorating tables for breakfast, providing special gifts for faculty and staff members and sending a representative to spend time celebrating the new school year along with FIS. Retired educators and current FIS Board of Education members are also invited to attend the breakfast gathering.
FIS facutly/staff members draw from a basket each year to see where they will sit. Coach Mike Thomas, FIS Community Education Director, is in charge of getting sponsors for the event.
Following the meal, FIS Superintendent Tamara Smith took a few moments to talk with the faculty and staff members about the new school year and encouraged them to make the most of it on behalf of the students the district serves.
“Give them your best every day,” Smith challenged the group. “Make a difference in the lives of our students and each other.”
Smith also asked the group to be positive and supportive.
“Our children deserve the best that you can give,” Smith said. “Go out … be awesome!”

The new school year officially begins Wednesday morning. Classes at Carr Elementary School will begin at 7:40 a.m. and end at 2:45 p.m. Preschool drop-off begins at 7:15 a.m. at the preschool entrance. If a morning preschool student has an older sibling at Carr, that student may also enter through the preschool. The Pearl Street door – where students in kindergarten through fifth grade will enter daily – will open at 7:20 a.m. Rather than using the last door on the Pearl Street side as the entryway this year, students will travel through the next to the last door which leads to the hallway between the library and the new second grade classrooms.
Preschool drop off will not begin until the program begins on August 22.
Although there are no changes to where middle school and high school students should be dropped off each morning, there is a slight change in time. Both entryways will open at 7:25 a.m. this school year. Start time for the middle school and high school is set for 7:45 a.m. with classes ending at 2:50 p.m.
FIS' 21st Century Community Learning Centers Bulldogs Beyond the Bell (B3) program will begin on Monday, August 15.
Registration for this program is required. Those needing to register their child for B3 should contact Kim Jobe prior to August 15. Jobe may be contacted at Carr Elementary School during the school day this week, by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 662-396-1413 after school hours.
No student may start B3 without a completed registration form. Those who attended the program last year, as well as camp this summer, MUST also register for the 2016-2017 program.
