Friday tastings

tasty'TRY IT FRIDAY' - Fulton County Extension's FCS Agent Anna McCoy and 4-H Agent tBernita Cheirs worked together to implement the “Try It Fridays” program. It is an event in which students sample new healthy foods in the snack serving lines at school as students get their fresh fruits in the afternoon. On each “Try It Friday,” students and staff sample a food and indicate how much they like or dislike it using the “Try It Friday” Ballot. So far students have sampled guava, butternut squash, muenster cheese, hummus, rambutan, raspberries, and gouda cheese.

tttIn selecting foods for students to try, foods were chosen based on whether they were uncommon items and if they were foods that were easily accessible in the stores. That way, if a child went home and told their parents they wanted rambutan for a snack, their parents would be able to go to their local grocery and purchase it.

All Carr Elementary students in Kindergarten through fifth grade participated in the program. Students enjoyed being able to vote yes or no if they like or don’t like the food and seeing the results from the previous Friday.

Overall, 71% of the students and staff liked the new foods that they tried. According to the agents, it was fun watching them step out of their comfort zone and try the samples especially when the foods did not appeal to them. Most of the teachers and staff had not tried many of the items that were brought and had preconceived notions that they did not like the foods but after trying it, they changed their minds.
