msstem1STEM LAB - Eighth grade students at Fulton City msstem3Middle School recently finished a unit on earthquakes and volcanoes during which we studied technologies that make buildings seismic-safe. The students worked in teams during the lab to build models of buildings using simple materials (toothpicks and marsh mellows) that were seismic safe (would survive being shaken on tray of Jello). Their design constraints were the building had to be at least 30 centimeters, could only be made of toothpicks and marsh mellows, and they had to stay within budget. Students delegated team jobs, researched designs, brainstormed ideas, filled out purchase orders for materials, built their models, and analyzed the results.
